Just a Note

Just a Note

It's the clouds in the sky
That never come earthward
It's the rain on the ground
That brings out the earthworms

It's the wind in the trees
That makes you feel higher
And the scent on the breeze
Can set you on fire

It's a note, a few words
Just a line from a letter
And the song that you heard
Somehow makes you feel better

Hitler's Car

I wrote a song called "Hitler's Car", and made a simple video to go with it:

Lasting Effects

I was playing Beethoven's Six Easy Variations on an Original Theme, a piece I had not played in years. You know how it is, it gets buried in the piano bench, and you're looking for something else, and it turns up, so why not give it a shot.

Anyhow, somewhere in there I found a note circled in pencil by my piano teacher, Gertrude Schueller. I studied with her for about 12 years in Highland Park, Michigan (down the road from the first Model T plant). The note was a G sharp, because of an accidental preceding it in the measure. Naturally, I played the G natural, doubled back and got it right, and realized that Mrs. Schueller, who is almost certainly in another world by now, had reached out and touched my music from the beyond. Truth is, I owe her a great debt, not just for that note, but for all of the notes that have popped out of my fingers over the years.

Thank you Mrs. Schueller. And sorry about the "clinker" I hit tonight.

Groves

Riding down through the eucalyptus grove

Where there are some trees that you’d like to know

The smell of leaves does fill the air

That friends and enemies both share

Riding down through the grapefruit grove

Where there are some trees that you’d like to know

The smell of blossoms fills the air

That friends and enemies both share

Riding through Canaan dusty and old

Where there are some dreams that you’d like to know

The smell of hope does fill the air

That friends and enemies both share

Face

Face

From the CD A Day without a Funeral, available at www.cdbaby.com/cd/nathanbigman

Appeared in my dream
but I couldn't see her
She said something to me
but I couldn't hear her
and all I wanted to do was to touch her face

I woke all at once
without any feeling
Just lay on my back
and stared at the ceiling
All I wanted to do was to touch her face

To touch her face
To hear her voice
It's like living and breathing
I have no choice
All I wanted to do was to touch her face
